A Evening Stroll For The Mind | Nadia Forde On 'La Passeggiata'

Recently, I’ve found myself walking more. Living in Bath, life on foot is far easier to nip
around this city's historic streets. That means our school run has become a 25-minute
stroll in the morning. Since we’ve started this, I’ve noticed that not only is my daily step
count up, but my mind is clearer, and most importantly, my connection with my daughter
is growing. Our daily chats vary from K-pop demon hunters to subjects much more
profound. So, what is it about walking that transforms time into connection, not just
exercise?

Italians call it the Passeggiata - a leisurely stroll, particularly one taken in the evening for
the purpose of socializing. This tradition dates back to the 16th century when families
and individuals meandered through public spaces, such as parks and piazzas, to
socialise, showcase their fashion, and savour the evening's ambiance.

As cities developed, the passeggiata evolved into Italian culture. It typically occurs
during the early evening hours, though my personal preference is early morning with a
coffee in hand. The passeggiata serves as a way for people to unwind, connect, and
truly experience their community. Today, it remains a cherished tradition that reflects the
Italian emphasis on social interaction and a slower pace of life, with obvious benefits
like aiding digestion and soaking in our surroundings. It’s this time outdoors that brings
us into the present.

There’s something about walking that sparks creative thoughts. The physical activity of
walking seems to catalyse conversation. It feels less pressured than a sit-down
tête-à-tête and yet somehow becomes more intimate. Some of my biggest life
unknowns have unraveled during a simple stroll.

So, I encourage you, next time you're stuck in the never-ending battle of “how to
squeeze more time in your day,” consider swapping a few minutes behind the wheel or
your meeting for some quality foot time. Not only will your step count rival that of an
athlete, but your brain (and possibly your connections) might just thank you. Plus, if you
encounter a few K-pop demon hunter tunes along the way, consider it a bonus!
