Marine Collagen Peptides: Skin Benefits & Science
We read a great post recently on Linkedin detailing how hard it is to educate consumers on how important the quality and traceability of their supplements is. After all - you're putting them IN to your body. You should know exactly what it is, what it does and where it comes from. The collagen market has made one thing look remarkably simple: add powder to water, wait for better skin but the science is more complicated than that.
Collagen is not one uniform ingredient, and the words marine collagen on the front of a packet tell you surprisingly little about what is actually inside it. Source matters. Processing matters. Molecular structure matters. Dosage matters. And, increasingly, so does the quality of the research sitting behind the ingredient. For us, that distinction is really important.

So, beyond the marketing, what should you actually know about marine collagen?
First: what exactly is marine collagen?
Collagen is one of the body's principal structural proteins, forming part of the framework of our skin, bones, tendons and connective tissues.
There are several different types of collagen within the body. Type I collagen is the predominant collagen within skin, which is one reason fish-derived collagen has become particularly interesting within skin-focused nutrition.
Marine collagen is obtained from fish material naturally rich in Type I collagen, typically skin. But the collagen in a supplement is rarely consumed in its original, intact form.
Instead, quality collagen supplements generally should use hydrolysed collagen peptides.
Hydrolysis uses enzymes to break the much larger collagen protein into smaller chains of amino acids called peptides. This changes the ingredient considerably, rather than expecting the digestive system to deal with an intact collagen molecule, you are consuming smaller peptide fragments designed for digestion and superior absorption.
Put simply - marine collagen describes where it came from. Hydrolysed collagen peptides describe what has been done to make it useful as an ingestible ingredient.

What happens to collagen after you drink it?
This is perhaps the most interesting part of the story. The old criticism of ingestible collagen was straightforward. Collagen is a protein, therefore surely the body simply digests it into amino acids like any other protein. Digestion does indeed break collagen down, but research suggests the story does not end there.
A study examining collagen hydrolysates throughout digestion and absorption detected increases in specific hydroxyproline-containing peptides, including Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly, in the bloodstream after collagen hydrolysate was consumed. In other words, collagen-derived peptides survived digestion sufficiently to enter circulation.
This is an important piece of the biological puzzle because experimental research has investigated whether such peptides can interact with cells including fibroblasts, the cells involved in producing components of the skin's extracellular matrix.
It is more sophisticated than the idea that swallowed collagen simply travels directly to your face and becomes new collagen. Biology rarely offers anything quite so convenient.
Instead, researchers are investigating a combination of mechanisms: collagen peptides provide amino acids used by the body while certain peptide fragments may also act as biological signals involved in extracellular-matrix activity in order to create new collagen.
And what does that mean for the skin?
A 2015 paper published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology investigated Peptan® collagen peptides using placebo-controlled clinical trials alongside laboratory work on human skin tissue.
Researchers measured skin hydration, dermal collagen density and fragmentation of the collagen network. They reported increased skin hydration after eight weeks of supplementation, alongside changes in collagen density and reduced fragmentation of the dermal collagen network. The laboratory component also found increased production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans - a family of molecules that includes those involved in maintaining hydration within the extracellular matrix.
This is particularly interesting because skin ageing is not simply about the number of lines visible in a mirror. Underneath the surface, the architecture of skin changes. Collagen fibres become increasingly fragmented. Dermal density changes, hydration declines and elasticity can decrease. The extracellular matrix that gives skin much of its structural quality becomes different over time. The more intelligent question is therefore not simply “will collagen erase a wrinkle?”. Instead you need to think,
Can nutrition help support some of the physiological parameters that influence how skin functions and ages?
The evidence suggests that collagen peptides definitely have a role.

What does the wider research say?
It is important here not to confuse promising evidence with certainty.
A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 19 studies involving 1,125 participants, 95% of whom were women, and found that hydrolysed collagen supplementation was associated with improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles compared with placebo.
Randomised controlled trials of other marine collagen peptides have similarly reported changes in parameters including hydration, elasticity and wrinkling over periods of approximately eight to twelve weeks.
More recently, a 2026 systematic review examining 25 randomised controlled trials found that collagen supplementation produced significant improvements over placebo in hydration in 10 of 15 studies, elasticity in 10 of 13 and wrinkle depth or volume in nine of 10.
The more accurate reading of the science today is that hydrolysed collagen supplementation has a growing and generally encouraging evidence base, particularly around skin hydration and elasticity, but larger, high-quality and independently funded trials are still needed which is super expensive - and this is why we don't see them happening. Which is exactly why ingredient quality and transparency matter.
Is marine collagen better than bovine collagen?
This is another area where supplement marketing can move faster than the evidence.
Marine collagen is naturally rich in Type I collagen, making it particularly relevant to skin-focused formulations. It can also be processed into low-molecular-weight hydrolysed peptides making it more bioavailable (superior absorption) when compared to bovine collagen.
But being marine does not automatically make a collagen supplement effective. Nor is it scientifically robust to assume that every marine collagen will necessarily be better absorbed than every bovine collagen simply because it came from a fish.
Hydrolysis, peptide profile, manufacturing quality, dose and the evidence supporting the specific ingredient all matter.
This is why we think asking whether a product contains “marine collagen” is only the beginning of the conversation.
Ask which one.
Ask how much.
Ask whether it is hydrolysed.
Ask whether the ingredient has been studied.
And ask whether the brand is prepared to tell you the source with evidence.

Why sourcing matters too
As marine collagen has become increasingly popular, another question has become unavoidable: where is all of that fish coming from?
Marine collagen can originate from both wild-caught and aquaculture fish. Neither term alone tells you whether a supply chain is responsible.
For wild-caught fish, independent certification systems such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) assess fisheries against criteria including the health of fish stocks, environmental impact and effective fishery management. Its Chain of Custody programme separately addresses traceability through the supply chain. If a brand can't direct you to the evidence of where the collagen is sourced, you should be asking why?

But sustainability is another area where consumers should look past broad claims. A picture of the ocean on a tub is not a sourcing policy. Look for traceability, named manufacturers, recognised certifications where relevant and transparency about the raw material being used.

Type I is particularly relevant when the formulation has been designed with skin in mind.How much are you actually taking?
There is a considerable difference between a prominently marketed collagen ingredient and the dose sitting behind it. Published studies have investigated gram-level daily quantities rather than token amounts added primarily for label appeal.Is the ingredient identifiable?
A named, researched ingredient gives you considerably more information to interrogate than an anonymous commodity powder.Is the research on the ingredient (is it a trademarked brand ingredient) or simply on collagen generally?
They are not the same thing.

The research is promising. It is not finished. For us, that isn't a weakness in the conversation. It is the reason to be more exacting about what we formulate with.
Known source. Hydrolysed Type I marine collagen. A meaningful daily dose. A named ingredient with published research. And the supporting nutrients required for normal skin biology.
Because the future of ingestible beauty will not be built on bigger promises. It will be built on better evidence.
