Are your supplements ultra-processed? Why what's inside the capsule matters as much as what's on the label.
The conversation about ultra-processed foods has fundamentally changed how we eat. We read labels, we question additives, we choose whole ingredients over industrial formulations. And yet, somehow, the supplement aisle has remained largely untouched by this reckoning.
That is beginning to change. As Vogue recently explored, the same principles that guide clean eating are now being applied to the world of vitamins, collagen powders and daily wellness blends and many products are failing the test.
The problem with most supplements
Walk into any pharmacy or scroll through any wellness retailer and you will find shelves of supplements that, on closer inspection, read remarkably like the ultra-processed foods we've been so carefully avoiding.
The issue is not the active ingredients, it's everything else. Most supplement formulations rely on a supporting cast of binders, fillers, emulsifiers, anti-caking agents, artificial colours, synthetic flavourings and flow agents to make manufacturing easier, cheaper and faster. These additives exist not to serve your health, but to serve the production line and they can wreak havoc on your gut when taken on a daily basis.
Consider the average collagen supplement. The headline ingredient may be impressive, but buried in the "other ingredients" section you will often find magnesium stearate (a manufacturing lubricant), maltodextrin (a cheap filler), silicon dioxide, Sunflower Lecithin (an emulsifier), artificial sweeteners or flavourings and stabilisers. These are not harmful in isolation, but they are not serving you, especially when you take them everyday. It means your body is working harder against those processed ingredients rather than on the good ingredients and this can show itself in increased inflammation and gut disruption. In an industry that trades on the promise of optimised health, their presence is at best negligent and at worst a form of quiet deception. It was our own experience with similar supplements that became the first battle in our formulation of Nectar 01.
What "clinically studied doses" actually means
There is a second, equally important dimension to the ultra-processed supplement problem: dosage theatre. Many products include trace amounts of impressive-sounding ingredients, adaptogens, antioxidants, rare peptides but at doses so low they have little support of results. The ingredient earns its place on the packaging; but you receive little in return.

Genuine quality means not only choosing the right ingredients, but deploying them at the doses shown in peer-reviewed research to actually work. This is a significantly more expensive approach to formulation. It is also the only honest one.
The NÆRE standard: what genuinely clean supplementation looks like
When we developed Nectar 01, the ultra-processed supplement model was precisely what we set out to dismantle. Working over six years with leading scientists and collaborating with esteemed aesthetic surgeon Dr Nigel Mercer, we built a formulation around a single governing principle: every ingredient must earn its place.
That means patented, peer-reviewed actives, Peptan® Hydrolysed Marine Collagen, AstaReal® Astaxanthin, Selenium SeLECT® and BioPerine® - sourced from the world's most advanced laboratories, at the clinically studied doses shown to produce measurable results. It means no proprietary blends designed to obscure under-dosing and it's why we ended up with a 15g powder instead of capsules or liquid gels - because we couldn't get our quality of ingredients in those forms without the un-neccessary additives we were campaigning against. This means we have no fillers, no bulking, no capsules, no emulsifiers - nothing that's not serving you.
What's in Nectar 01:
Peptan® Hydrolysed Marine Collagen at 8,000mg a low molecular weight, optimum absorption peptide, at a clinically meaningful dose.
AstaReal® Astaxanthin one of nature's most potent antioxidants from a bright red algae, from a certified, traceable source.
Selenium SeLECT® the most bioavailable selenium that supports immune function and DNA repair.
BioPerine® clinically shown to enhance absorption of complementary nutrients such as Selenium.
What's not in Nectar 01:
No magnesium stearate, maltodextrin or manufacturing lubricants
No artificial colours or synthetic flavouring
No proprietary blends that obscure ingredient doses
No ultra processed emulsifiers like sunflower lecithin
The questions worth asking
The shift in supplement literacy is already underway. Those who have learned to question the ingredient lists on their food are beginning to apply the same scrutiny to their daily wellness ritual and they are finding answers they didn't expect.
The questions are simple. What is actually in this product, not just the headline actives, but every ingredient? Are the doses of those actives the doses used in clinical trials? Who formulated this, and on what basis?
These are not niche or specialist questions. They are the same questions we now routinely ask about the food on our plates. The supplement industry has been slower to face them. That is, finally, changing.
Nectar 01 was built for exactly this moment, not as a response to a trend, but as a rejection of the standard that made the trend necessary - we were struggling with the supplements on the shelf a whole 6 years ago and it's only just evolving. Because truly effective supplementation was never about what you see on the front of the packet. It was always about what's inside.
