The Quiet Luxury of Hair: An Interview with Aidan Darcy the Man Behind Kidman, Hathaway, and Ronan.
There is a specific kind of magic required to handle the hair of a global icon. It isn’t just about the architecture of an up do or the precision of a cut; it’s about the energy of the chair.
Aidan Darcy, the Dublin-born stylist who has become a trusted presence behind some of Hollywood’s most luminous manes, contributing to work seen on Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway, and working directly with clients such as Saoirse Ronan and Christa Miller has mastered this alchemy.
Long before he was a fixture backstage at Paris Fashion Week for houses like Chanel, Dior, and Prada, he was refining his technical rigour in Ireland. His rise was fuelled by a rare kind of dedication that eventually caught the eye of industry legends. By working closely alongside names such as Adir Abergel, Darcy didn’t just learn how to style; he learned how to shape a creative identity.

But for Darcy, the red carpet was only the beginning. His time in Paris, moving between the high-pressure environments of Miu Miu and Burberry, served as a testing ground for hair resilience. He saw firsthand the toll that global press tours and runway restyling took on even the healthiest hair. Darcy shares in our NÆRE philosophy that true beauty is rooted (excuse the pun) in wellbeing. That ‘lit from within’ glow, even for hair, begins at the foundation. This has led to the birth of EYRA, his density-focused hair care line.
What’s your earliest memory of hair and what was the moment you knew this was the industry you wanted to pursue?
I always say that hair found me before I even fully understood what it was. As a teenager, I struggled quite deeply with my mental health, and school was a very difficult time for me. I didn’t feel connected to anything around me. I remember one very specific moment, I was about 13 or 14 and I walked into a shop and saw a January 2009 issue of Vogue with Anne Hathaway on the cover.
I bought it, brought it home, and sat with it for hours. At the time, I didn’t fully understand the world I was looking at, fashion, editorial, beauty, but I felt something. It was like a door opened. A sense of escapism, but also possibility.
I had always been extremely creative growing up, painting, working with my hands, but that moment gave it direction. It was the first time I thought, maybe this is something I could be part of.
What was the single most pivotal “yes” that changed the trajectory of your career?
Without a doubt, meeting Adir Abergel. We met around six years ago while working on a film with Charlize Theron, and from that moment everything began to shift. Adir saw something in me before I fully saw it in myself.
He became not only a mentor, but a true guiding force, teaching me not just the technical side of hair, but the deeper understanding of artistry, discipline, and how to navigate this industry with integrity.
That “yes” to that opportunity, and to that relationship completely changed the trajectory of my career. It opened doors, but more importantly, it built the foundation of who I am as a hairstylist today.
You’ve mastered everything from avant-garde runway looks to red-carpet glamour. What is your absolute favourite hairstyle to create?
I’m always drawn to hair that feels effortless, but intentional. Something that looks almost undone, but is actually incredibly considered. Soft structure, natural movement, and a sense that the hair belongs to the person, not the other way around.
For me, the most beautiful hair never looks overdone. It feels lived-in, elevated, and quietly powerful.

When working on talent such as Nicole Kidman or Anne Hathaway, how do you balance maintaining their signature look with pushing creative boundaries?
When working on talent at that level, whether directly with my own clients such as Saoirse Ronan or Christa Miller, or as part of a wider team alongside my mentor Adir Abergel, you very quickly understand that it’s never just about the hair.
It’s about the person.
Hair and makeup are often the first people someone sees at the start of their day. It’s a very intimate, trusting relationship, and that energy in the room sets the tone for everything that follows.
Working with and under Adir has given me a deep insight into the relationships he has built over many years with women like Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway, relationships rooted in trust, consistency, and understanding how to make someone feel like the very best version of themselves.
I feel incredibly grateful to be part of those moments with him, and to witness that level of care and intention. Whether it’s my own client or part of a team, my approach is always the same, to honour who that person is, to respect what people recognise in them, and then gently refine or evolve it in a way that still feels completely authentic.
It’s never about changing someone. It’s about enhancing what’s already there, and allowing them to feel confident, comfortable, and truly themselves.
The fashion world is often married with art. Who and what have been your main influences?
My influences have always extended beyond hair. Art, architecture, nature, even silence, all inform how I see beauty. I’m deeply inspired by texture and contrast, and the balance between something that feels raw yet refined. Travel has also shaped me hugely. Especially time spent in Paris, where there’s a real appreciation for restraint and quiet luxury that resonates with me.
If you were to choose a decade of hair, what would it be? And one to leave behind?
I have a deep appreciation for the 90s. There was an effortlessness to beauty then that feels very relevant again today. It wasn’t overly polished, there was individuality, imperfection, and attitude. In terms of what we leave behind, anything that feels overly forced or artificial. Hair should never feel like it’s fighting against the person wearing it.
What is the most challenging “hair emergency” you’ve solved backstage?
Backstage, everything is an emergency, just on different levels. There have been moments where hair has been overworked, damaged, or completely unresponsive minutes before a show. The key is staying calm. Hair responds to energy as much as it does to technique. You have to simplify, think quickly, and trust your instinct.

When was your lightbulb moment for EYRA?
The idea for EYRA came from years of seeing the same problem repeated.
Hair has traditionally been categorised by texture, straight, wavy, curly or oily, but in my experience, that’s not what determines how hair behaves.
Working across runway, editorial, and red carpet, I saw that hair density is the true foundation. The amount of hair and the diameter of each strand dictates how it holds style, responds to product, and maintains health.
That realisation was the beginning of EYRA.
Can you explain the connection between internal and external hair health?
True hair health is holistic.
What you nourish your body with supports growth, strength, and resilience from within, while what you apply topically protects, restores, and enhances the fibre externally.
It’s not one or the other, it’s a conversation and relationship between both.
Why is density a more accurate metric for hair health?
Density directly affects how hair behaves. Fine hair requires support without weight, while thicker hair needs control without restriction. By formulating for density, you’re working with the natural structure of the hair rather than against it.
It allows for a much more precise and personalised approach.

What has been the most surprising aspect of founder life?
How personal it is. You pour everything into it, your time, your energy, your resources, but also your identity. It’s incredibly rewarding, but it requires a level of resilience that you can’t fully prepare for.
How do you maintain your own wellbeing?
I’ve learned that you have to protect your energy as much as your time. Stepping away, slowing down, and reconnecting with nature and what grounds you is essential, especially in a fast-paced environment.
Do you have a favourite place to unwind?
Being by the sea or surrounded by trees in a dense forest is something that always resets me. There’s a stillness there that you don’t find anywhere else.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?
Seeing people feel confident in themselves. Whether that’s through my work as a stylist or through EYRA, that transformation is everything.

Biotin, zinc and selenium play critical roles in maintaining normal hair growth and strength, with copper contributing to normal hair pigmentation. B vitamins (B2, B3) support cellular energy processes within the hair follicle, and nutrient-dense greens such as spirulina, chlorella, kale and spinach provide additional vitamins and minerals that nourish the scalp environment. Finally, vitamin E and astaxanthin help protect hair follicles from oxidative stress, supporting overall hair health and resilience.
